Hamden Public Schools
Summer Reading 2008

Welcome to the
HPS Summer Reading page.
Here you will find links to our
Summer Reading lists for Grades 1 to 12.
Reading during the summer is very important!
Research has shown students can actually lose
some of the skills they gained over the school year
if they do not keep in practice.
It’s just like they say about exercise – use it or lose it!
Here are the links to the fliers, which explain
what books can be read at each grade level
and what activities are required. Directions for the
A-to-Z poem are below.
(These are .pdf files, which require Adobe Reader to view.
Most computers have this, but if you do not, go to
www.adobe.com to download the latest free version.)

Directions for Elementary activity:A-to-Z Poems
Write the letters A through Z on the left side of the page. You can make the letters separate from your word or start the first word in the line.
Next to each letter, write one to four appropriate words or phrases beginning with that letter. The words should be about the story or topic of the book.
So, for example, if you read a non-fiction book about pets, you could start your
A-to-Z poem like this:
A – animals
B – birds, behavior
C – companion, caring
D – dogs
… and so on to Z.
If you read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, your A-to-Z poem could start:
A – animagus
B – Beauxbatons
C – Crookshanks the cat, contest
D – Dursleys, diving underwater, Durmstrang
…and so on through Z.
If you turn this into a poster, you can illustrate you’re A to Z poem, as well. But the words are what is important – they should relate well to your book.
Important: The top of the page should have the title of the book and the author’s name. Make sure your name is on the paper, also.
